Work Experience Case Studies

A small group of Borbeck grammar school students from Essen in Germany have successfully completed 2-week work experience placements. As students attending the bilingual department of the school, they had excellent levels of spoken and written English. Nonetheless, before the work placements started, Jacqueline Newcombe (MA), a specialist English as a Foreign Language Tutor, with many years of experience tutoring students, provided expert English language tuition, which focused on increasing the students’ knowledge of every day and professional English.

Case study 1: Working in a welcoming local primary school, Philipp gained insights into similarities and differences in teaching methods, school facilities and classroom resources between England and Germany. It was a fulfilling experience being immersed in the language, learning new vocabulary relating to subjects, and participating in the extra-curricular activities. Philipp commented he really liked working with children and getting to meet new people.

Case study 2:  Jan gained hands-on experience in a retail environment at a high street shop, which also boasts a successful online store. Tasks included sorting, categorising and displaying, e.g. books and music. Training was provided in work place safety and knowledge was gained in the UK Gift Aid scheme. According to Jan, the best part of his placement was: “meeting all the wonderful people working at Oxfam, and having a variety of things to do each day.”

Case study 3: Interested in a career in medicine, Katharina working worked alongside therapists, carers and social work students in a residential setting for adults with disabilities. Katharina gained hands-on experience of therapeutic, sensory and occupational interventions. She also learned a lot about different kinds of disabilities and how to help residents to live as independently as possible.

A visit to Bath, a UNESCO world heritage city, rich in history included a tour of the Roman Baths and free time to explore this beautiful Georgian city. The following day the students explored London on foot seeing tourist sights, such as Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, the Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral and Trafalgar Square.
